Workers responding to emergency events and or disasters will see and experience events that will strain their ability to function. These events, which include having to witness or experience tragedy, death, serious injuries and threatening situations are called "Critical Incidents." The physical and psychological well-being of those experiencing this stress, as well as their future ability to function through a prolonged response, will depend upon how they manage this stress. The Medina County First Responder Support Team (Medina County F1RST) offers services to manage the stress of critical incidents.
The goal of peer support is to provide first responders the opportunity to receive emotional and tangible support through times of personal or professional crisis and to help anticipate and address potential difficulties. Peer support uses shared experiences as a powerful tool to help others.
Defusing is a group intervention used to lower anxiety and stress immediately following an incident, usually within a few hours. The team facilitators provide a quiet, controlled environment where first responders can speak freely about their reactions, thoughts, and concerns without reservation or fear of retribution.
Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) is a facilitator-led, structured group process, conducted soon, usually with a few days, after a traumatic event with individuals considered to be under stress from trauma exposure. During the group process, participants are encouraged to describe their experience of the incident and its aftermath, followed by a presentation on common stress reactions and stress management. This early intervention process supports recovery by providing group support and linking employees to further counseling and treatment services if they become necessary.
Following the delivery of CISM services, the team will follow up with the referring agency to assess if further support is warranted. Additional response may be provided. Team members will also follow up with individuals as needed to ensure referrals are provided when appropriate.
